she is the sister-daughter of oedipus, her mother is her grandmother, her sister is her neice-aunt-sister, and her brothers are her nephew-uncle-brothers. the very existence of her and her family caused a plague. when she was very young, her mother jocasta killed herself, and her father oedipus took a pin from jocastas corpse dress and blinded himself.
antigone, still a child, then had to be the guide for her blind father. they were scorned from towns, cursed, the two of them wandering alone, and eventually when a town welcomed them, antigone had to watch as oedipus and her brother polynikes fought. oedipus cursed her brothers to kill each other in front of antigone, and then died, and antigone (who begged to be killed and buried with her father) wasnt allowed to see his tomb.
she went back to their city to stop her brothers from killing each other and starting a civil war, failed, and had to watch her uncle kreon (who kidnapped her) become king. kreon allowed 1 brother to be buried, but desecrated the body of the other and declared mourning him a crime punishable by death. this would mean polynikes would literally never be able to rest in the afterlife. antigone, who is still a child, refuses to let this happen, on the grounds that this is fucked up and unjust. also her entire family is cursed to be tangled in genuinely horrifying ways and antigone is physically unable to conceive of living, and not resting next to her family in her tomb.
she manages to pour a tiny bit of dirt onto her brothers body but is caught, and sentenced to death by her uncle. he refuses to listen to "a little girl" and says fuck you and the gods law, im king, and doesnt listen to his son (antigones fiancé) or anyone else. antigone is marched through the city, STILL A VERY YOUNG CHILD, and is buried alive with her wedding things. unable to bear the long slow death of starvation and darkness, she (who may be as young as 12) hangs herself on her wedding veil. minutes later kreon changes his mind and tries to save her, but shes dead. antigones fiancé kills himself, her fianceés mother kills herself, and antigones sister is eventually murdered too.
she is literally the blueprint for tragic stories and has been for two thousand five hundred years. sophocles wrote this play when he was in his twenties and very emotional.
